Didim
Didyma – The Sanctuary of Apollo
In ancient times, Didyma was one of the most important religious centers of the Ionian world, closely connected to the nearby city of Miletus by a Sacred Road used for ceremonial processions. Pilgrims and oracles would travel this road to reach the Temple of Apollo, seeking divine guidance from one of the most famous oracles of the ancient Greek world—second only to Delphi.
The Temple of Apollo at Didyma was a magnificent structure designed in the Hellenistic Period, renowned for its grand scale and architectural sophistication. Even though construction continued for centuries, the temple was never fully completed, leaving behind an awe-inspiring ruin that still conveys its former grandeur. Massive marble columns, intricate carvings, and the remains of the oracle chamber invite visitors to imagine the spiritual and cultural significance this sanctuary once held.
