Visit with an accredited guide the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Philippi, named after himself by Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great.
In a city that flourished as a Christian metropolis after Apostle Paul founded there the first Christian Church in European territories in 49-50 A.C., a 4th c. B.C. theatre, a Roman Forum, three early Christian basilicas, an Octagon Church and the assumed spot where Apostle Paul was imprisoned after curing a girl are among the highlights to be seen.
Entrance fee to the site is included.
Outside the city lies the field of one of the greatest battles of the Roman Civil War, involving about 200,000 men, where the forces of Marcus Antonius and Octavianus clashed in 42 B.C. with those of Brutus and Cassius, in order to avenge for Julius Caesar's assassination.
