Dia Island: A Mythological and Natural Landmark
Dia is an uninhabited, protected island (Natura 2000) north of Heraklion. From afar, it resembles a giant lizard, while offering a rare blend of pristine nature, history, and crystal-clear waters. Key Highlights The Myth: According to legend, it is a sea dragon turned to stone by Zeus with a lightning bolt to protect Crete. The Minoan Port: In 1975, Jacques-Yves Cousteau discovered the ruins of Knossos' ancient protective port on the island's seabed. Wildlife Sanctuary: It serves as a natural habitat for the protected Cretan wild goat (Kri-Kri) and rare falcon species. St. George's Bay: The central, wind-protected cove with turquoise waters, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and visiting the picturesque Ascension Chapel.
