Évora is located in the Center of Alentejo, from its original name Ébora, was a city defended by a strong castle and surrounded by solid walls when the army of King D. Afonso Henriques commanded by Geraldo “No Fear” conquered the Moors in 1165. Our visit begins towards Évora, passing by the 25 de Abril bridge. Arriving in Évora, visit Giraldo Square, the Castle and the majestic Temple of Diana. We suggest a lunch stop at a typical restaurant and then visit the Bones Chapel, the Cathedral and the San Francisco Church.

Temple romain d'Évora (Temple de Diane)
The Roman Temple of Évora along with the entire historic center is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. Prior to this period the temple underwent several modifications both in its architecture and its use. In the century V, barbarian peoples invaded the city and destroyed part of the monument. Later, during the Middle Ages, the building was incorporated into the City Castle and it is believed that years later it was even used as a slaughterhouse.
Nowadays the temple has its complete base, its ruined stairs and has 14 columns made of marble and granite.

Chapelle des Os
The Bones Chapel is one of the best known monuments of Évora in Portugal. It is situated in the Church of San Francisco. It was built in the 17th century on the initiative of three Franciscan monks who, in the spirit of the time (religious counter-reform, according to the norms of the Council of Trent), intended to convey the message of the transience of life, as the famous warning at the entrance: "We bones that are here for your waiting."
Its walls and eight pillars are "decorated" with bones and skulls linked by brown cement. The vaults are of brick plastered in white, painted with allegorical motifs to death. It is a monument of penitential architecture of ornate arches with rows of skulls, cornices and white ships. It was calculated around five thousand bones, including skulls, vertebrae, femurs and others, from cemeteries, located in churches and convents of the city, which were linked with brown cement and are arranged on the walls, ceiling, columns and even outside. .

Travailler pour Giraldo
In Évora, all roads lead to Giraldo Square.
As for the Giraldo Square itself, the former Great Square of Évora, was considered as a National Monument in 1910. Its floor consists of Portuguese pavement. Opposite the source you can find the current Banco de Portugal branch, formerly with connections to the Inquisition, which has a fantastic façade, filling the look of passersby.
Underneath the arcades, which everyone is looking for their architecture and the shadow they give, you can find the most varied trade, and two essential points to visit: the famous Café Arcada, with some of the best cakes in town; and Nazaré Stationery, the oldest in Évora.
In the middle of Giraldo Square, sit on one of the beautiful terraces and enjoy your rest in the Alentejo while admiring the beautiful neoclassical and romantic façades. Note the interesting lamps scattered around Giraldo Square and the crests on its top that honor Geraldo Geraldes, the No Scare!
