Independence Monument
The Independence Monument in Phnom Penh, built in 1958, honors Cambodia's independence from France in 1953. Standing 37 meters tall at the intersection of Norodom and Sihanouk Boulevards, it features a lotus-shaped stupa inspired by Khmer architecture. Designed by architect Vann Molyvann, the monument serves as the focal point of national celebrations, with a ceremonial flame often lit by officials. It is a popular site for both locals and tourists year-round.

Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh is a former school turned into Security Prison 21 (S-21) by the Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979. During this time, an estimated 20,000 people were imprisoned and tortured. Known as "Hill of the Poisonous Trees," Tuol Sleng was one of many Khmer Rouge prisons. In 2010, the chief of the prison, Kang Kek Iew (alias Duch), was convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Wat Phnom
Situated atop a 27-meter-high hill, Wat Phnom is the only elevated spot in Phnom Penh. Legend has it that the first pagoda was built in 1373 to house four Buddha statues found by a woman named Penh, which had been deposited by the Mekong River. The main entrance to the pagoda is through a grand eastern staircase, flanked by lion statues and naga (snake) balustrades.
