Sistine Chapel
The Sistine Chapel is a Renaissance masterpiece in the Vatican, famous for Michelangelo's frescoes and for its unique liturgical and artistic role. The walls of the Chapel are decorated with frescoes by major 15th-century artists like Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Pinturicchio, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Luca Signorelli, Piero di Cosimo, and Cosimo Rosselli, depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament. The ceiling, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, shows a starry sky with biblical figures and prophets, culminating in the famous scene of the Creation of Adam. On the altar wall is the Last Judgment, made between 1535 and 1541, depicting Christ as judge along with numerous saints and the damned.
