Acropolis
The Acropolis of Athens, an symbol of classical civilization, rises above the city. Its significance dates back to the Neolithic period, evolving into a fortified citadel during the Mycenaean era. The 5th century BC Golden Age of Athens, under Pericles, saw the construction of its iconic structures, notably the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Propylaea, and the Temple of Athena Nike.
The Parthenon, was dedicated to Athena and housed a gold and ivory statue by Phidias. The Erechtheion, known for its Caryatids, was dedicated to Athena and Poseidon. The Propylaea, the grand entrance, and the Temple of Athena Nike, symbolizing victory, highlight the architectural brilliance of ancient Greece. The Acropolis was a cultural and religious hub, hosting festivals like the Panathenaic Festival.
