The Cave of river Aggitis
Aggitis Cave holds a unique place among European caves, housing a living underground river and immense geological formations. The surrounding gorge adds outdoor adventure options like hiking and rafting, enriched by local myths tying the landscape to ancient Greek legends. Together, they make for a memorable excursion in the Drama region.
Greece’s longest and largest river cave (total length over 21 km) and the only one of its kind in the country. Around 500 m are accessible to visitors. Explored historically in the 1950s and more scientifically from 1978 onward, reaching around 500 m inside today.
Inside, a raised footpath guides visitors above the flowing river, amid dramatic stalactites—some nearly 2 m in diameter that touch the water’s surface—vividly colored by minerals like iron, manganese, and copper.
The “Hall of the Wheel”, a vaulted chamber roughly 40 m wide and up to 15 m high, features an old hydraulic wheel once used to irrigate local tobacco fields.
Open year‑round.
