Itinerary
1
Conor Pass
Weather permitting, begin with a scenic drive to the viewing car park at Conor Pass, one of Ireland’s highest mountain roads. Take in views across the glaciated valley, mountain lakes, Dingle Bay and the surrounding peaks before returning towards Dingle to begin the Slea Head route. This stop may be omitted in poor visibility, high winds or unsuitable road conditions.
10 minutes
2
Ventry Beach
Travel west from Dingle through the coastal village of Ventry and alongside its natural harbour as the tour joins the Slea Head Drive. Hear about the area’s maritime history and landscape while continuing towards the peninsula’s Atlantic coast. A brief photo stop overlooking Ventry Beach may be made when time and conditions allow.
3
Dunbeg Fort
An optional visit to Dún Beag, an ancient stone promontory fort dramatically positioned above the Atlantic Ocean. Follow the protected walkway to view the fort and surrounding coastline from a safe distance. Entry is optional, and the admission charge is not included in the tour price. Guests who prefer not to enter can enjoy the coastal setting from the visitor area.
20 minutes
4
Hold A Baby Lamb
An optional visit to a family-run farm where guests may meet and hold a lamb and see traditional dry-stone clocháns, commonly known as beehive huts. The experience is subject to opening and animal availability. Admission is optional, not included in the tour price and payable directly at the attraction.
25 minutes
5
Cross at Slea Head
Stop at one of the Dingle Peninsula’s signature viewpoints, where the road meets the open Atlantic. Take in views across the rugged coastline towards the Blasket Islands and the Skelligs on a clear day, while hearing about the landscape, island communities and importance of the Slea Head route.
10 minutes
6
Coumeenoole Beach
Pause above Coumeenoole Beach, where steep cliffs frame a small Atlantic cove with views towards the Blasket Islands. Depending on the weather, mobility and time available, guests can enjoy the main viewpoint or take a short walk towards the beach. Swimming is not recommended because of strong currents.
20 minutes
7
Dun Chaoin Pier
View the distinctive winding road leading down to Dún Chaoin Pier, surrounded by steep cliffs and overlooking the Blasket Islands. This is normally a viewpoint and photography stop; the tour does not include walking or driving down the narrow pier road.
20 minutes
8
The Blasket Centre
Stop at the Blasket Centre in Dún Chaoin, overlooking Great Blasket Island. The café, visitor facilities and outdoor walk to the viewing platform can be accessed without purchasing an exhibition ticket. Entry to the indoor exhibition, including the approximately 15-minute audiovisual presentation, requires paid admission and is not included in the tour price. A full exhibition visit can be included by prior preference, with the itinerary adjusted accordingly.
30 minutes
9
Gallarus Oratory
Visit Gallarus Oratory, a remarkably preserved dry-stone church set beneath Mount Brandon. Walk around the monument and learn about its distinctive corbelled construction, uncertain date and place within the peninsula’s early Christian heritage.
30 minutes
10
Kilmalkedar Church
Explore Kilmalkedar Church and its surrounding monastic site, traditionally associated with St Brendan. See the Romanesque church, ogham stone, sundial, alphabet stone and other features that reflect centuries of pilgrimage and worship on the Dingle Peninsula. The site is outdoors, with uneven grass and pathways.
