According to mythology, Apollo defeated Python, the dragon that guarded the oracle, establishing Delphi as a sacred sanctuary. The god was worshipped here alongside his mother Leto and his sister Artemis.
At the heart of the site stands the Temple of Apollo, the most important monument of the sanctuary and the center of religious life in ancient Delphi.
Inside the temple, the famous oracle Pythia delivered her prophecies, believed to be inspired by vapours rising from a sacred chasm beneath the site.
