Le phare de La Canée est le plus ancien phare de Méditerranée, construit en 1864. Il est le principal monument de La Canée. Sa tour, haute de 21 m, repose sur un socle en pierre et se trouve à l'extrémité de la jetée du vieux port, face à la forteresse de Firkas. L'accès au phare est interdit aux visiteurs. Construit par les Vénitiens vers 1600, le phare de La Canée fut détruit lors du siège de La Canée. Il prit sa forme définitive, celle d'un minaret, pendant l'occupation égyptienne. Il fut restauré en 1996.

The fortress of Firkas on the northwest side of the port of Chania was constructed between 1610 and 1645 to protect the Venetian harbour entrance from raiders. after the fall of the city of Chania in the hands of the Turks in 1645, the fort was renamed “Firka”, which in Turkish means “barrack”. On the northern side of the Firka fortress were six consecutive domes, that sheltered the large cannons, so that they would face the entrance of the harbour and face any possible attacker. The Firka Fortress was used as a prison since then and up to the Greek civil war of the 20th century. During the Ottoman rule, the Firka Fortress constituted the seat of the military governor of the city. It is the place where the Greek flag was raised, in 1913, the year of the reunion of Crete with Greece. Today, at the entrance of the Fortress is situated the Maritime Museum.

La Canée est la plus ancienne ville d'Europe habitée sans interruption. La civilisation minoenne remonte à plus de 3000 av. J.-C. et a connu une fin brutale en 1250 av. J.-C., suite à un tremblement de terre et un tsunami destructeurs. De nombreuses recherches suggèrent que la civilisation minoenne a été détruite par l'éruption du volcan de Santorin. Des fouilles archéologiques sur la colline de Kasteli ont permis d'observer les fondations de bâtiments, de rues et de réseaux d'égouts. Les fouilles se poursuivent. Kydonia était le nom de La Canée à l'époque minoenne.

At the end of May 1941 there was a fierce battle between German paratroopers and the British, new Zealand and Australian defenders. it was the first airborne only operation in history. The cemetery has panoramic views of Souda bay and the White Mountains.
