Itinerary
1
Pulitzer Fountain
We will admire this statue, and discuss its history and meaning - and remark on what building had been near it - and the Plaza Hotel next door
10 minutes
2
Central Park
The grandest stage in New York City, Central Park functions as everyone's front and back lawn, playground, meditation spot - you name it - almost everything has happened here. But it is a product of meticulous design, and now we can enjoy its preservation thanks to the people of the city - its immediate neighbors as well as its occasional visitors. Celebrate the Park!
2 hours and 30 minutes
3
Wollman Rink
We may watch skaters - or children on carnival rides - depending on the season; but we will also discuss it's colorful and varied history!
15 minutes
4
Bethesda Terrace
The only sculpture in the original design of the Park - and a glorious meeting place for many!
15 minutes
5
Upper East Side
Legendary as the pinnacle of living for the "upper crust," the Upper East Side is much more varied and storied than that might imply. But, we shall see the Cook Block, and a town house or two of some of estimable wealth, but we will also hear about the history of this neighborhood - for that is what it is: a neighborhood of people and institutions of many from all over the world.
30 minutes
6
New York Society Library
Established in 1754 on Nassau Street, and now in its third location, the Society Library has had some of the most distinguished borrowers this country has ever known - and you'll learn what it meant to have an overdue book finally returned!
15 minutes
7
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The largest collection of art in the Western Hemisphere, and second in size only to the Louvre, the Met is a lifetime's worth of attractions - and the jewel of this neighborhood.
8
Belvedere Castle
After a refreshing walk in the woods (really!), we shall discover the magnificent "folly" of Calvert Vaux - a newly restored "castle" overlooking Turtle Pond - and a magnificent view of the Great Lawn.
