These Catacombs are named after Pope Callistus I, who was killed in Trastevere in 222 while saying mass. Initially they were used by the early Christians as a meeting place and only later were transformed into a cemetery. Archaeologists have found the tombs of numerous popes and martyrs of Christianity. Next to the tomb of St. Cecilia, also worthy of note is the crypt of the popes, where nine popes of the first centuries of Christianity were buried.
