The National Memorial Chorten, built in 1974, is one of Thimphu's most revered Buddhist monuments. Constructed in memory of the Third King of Bhutan, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, it symbolizes peace, prosperity, and the well-being of the Bhutanese people. Unlike many chortens, it does not contain human remains but enshrines sacred relics, statues, and intricate murals depicting Buddhist teachings. Every day, local devotees gather here to circumambulate the chorten, spin prayer wheels, and offer prayers, making it a vibrant center of spiritual life in Bhutan.

The Buddha Dordenma is one of the world's largest seated Buddha statues, standing 54 meters (169 feet) tall atop Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, overlooking Thimphu Valley. Completed in 2015, the magnificent bronze statue is gilded in gold and houses 125,000 smaller Buddha statues inside. Built to fulfill an ancient prophecy and promote world peace and happiness, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of Thimphu and serves as an important pilgrimage site as well as a popular tourist attraction.
