Long before Athens expanded, the Attic landscape was crossed by countless streams and waterways. One of the last surviving traces of that landscape is the Podoniftis stream, which once flowed through a landscape of orchards, gardens, and cypress trees north of the city. On this self-guided audio tour, you'll discover hidden layers of that older Athens. You'll also hear how refugee communities, a legendary cave taverna, and a deadly 1994 flood all shaped the stream's story. The tour starts at the church of Agia Varvara outside Ano Patisia Metro Station. Walking along Perissou Street, you'll get your first close look at Podoniftis, its banks dense with eucalyptus, fig trees, and reeds, with wa...

Itinerary
1
Walk along Chalkidos Street and catch your first glimpse of the Podoniftis stream through the trees. Here you'll see the waterway that once shaped this entire corner of Attica come into view.
2
Visit the Church of Agia Efimia, built by refugee families as a place of memory and belonging. Pause here to take in a landmark that still carries the story of the community that founded it.
3
Pass this modern supermarket as you continue along the route through the neighbourhood. It marks a quiet stretch of the walk between the stream views and the streets ahead.
4
Stroll along Ionias Street, named after one of the Greek communities forced from their homes in Asia Minor in 1922. Alongside nearby streets like Smyrnis and Kordeliou, it keeps that history alive in the neighbourhood's everyday geography.
