Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) was first built in 942 by Taira no Kimimasa, and was later rebuilt at its current location. It has been repeatedly destroyed by fire and rebuilt, and the current Kaminarimon was rebuilt in 1960 with a donation from Konosuke Matsushita. Its official name is “Fūraijinmon”. This name comes from the two statues that stand on either side of the gate, the thunder god and the wind god, and they protect Sensoji Temple from floods and fires.
