Akaroa is a beautiful French-inspired seaside town on Banks Peninsula, about 1.5 hours from Christchurch. Surrounded by volcanic hills and a stunning natural harbour, Akaroa is famous for its peaceful atmosphere, wildlife cruises, cafés, and historic charm.
The name “Akaroa” comes from the Māori language meaning “Long Harbour.” The town also has strong French heritage dating back to the 1840s, which is reflected in its street names, architecture, and cuisine.
