There are very few places on this enchanting island as rich in culture and history as the renowned Accompong Town. This Maroon settlement is perched high up in the mountains of the bread-basket parish of St. Elizabeth. Described as a nation within a nation this unique community is the symbol of the indigenous African pride as exuded by its inhabitants; the maroons. These Maroons are descendants of former runaway slaves who fled the slave plantations of Jamaica to form their communities.
Living on lands granted under a treaty with the British, the maroons continue to practice and enjoy the traditional customs handed down by their forefathers. The people of Accompong are law-abiding and trustworthy individuals who take pride in their communal tendencies that spread a high sense of belonging to all villagers. The unique lifestyle of the Maroons contributes to their unusually high life expectancy.
