Thimphu Chorten (Memorial Chorten)
Arriving in Thimphu, you will check in to your hotel and enjoy some time to relax after your journey. In the afternoon, your exploration of the capital begins with a visit to the National Memorial Chorten, one of the city’s most revered spiritual landmarks.
The National Memorial Chorten was built in memory of H.M. Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, Bhutan’s third king and the “Father of Modern Bhutan.” Originally envisioned by the late king as a monument dedicated to world peace, it was later completed and consecrated by the Royal Family and the Cabinet on July 28, 1974.
Adorned with intricate carvings, golden spires, and vibrant murals depicting Buddhist teachings, the chorten stands as both a sacred site and a symbol of peace and compassion. Locals and monks frequently gather here to perform circumambulation and prayers, creating a deeply spiritual and calming atmosphere. This iconic landmark reflects the heart of Thimphu’s spiritual life and Bhutan’s enduring pursuit of harmony and well-being.
