Temple Kuon-ji
Minobusan Kuon-ji is the head temple of Nichiren Buddhism and one of Japan’s most important living religious sites. Founded in 1274, the temple lies deep in the mountains of Yamanashi and has served for centuries as a center of faith, pilgrimage, and Buddhist practice. Unlike many temples valued mainly as historical landmarks, Kuon-ji remains an active spiritual community where monks continue daily training and rituals. The temple grounds rise through a series of gates and halls, forming a symbolic path associated with perseverance and spiritual awakening. Kuon-ji is closely connected to the Buddhist reformer Nichiren, who spent his final years here after challenging established religious authorities through his devotion to the Lotus Sutra. Today, visitors encounter not only historic architecture but also a living tradition, offering insight into how religious belief has shaped Japanese culture from the medieval era to the present.
