Mariam, fille du roi Ashot Ier, promit de construire trente églises en l'honneur de son défunt mari. Elle tint parole toute sa vie. L'une d'elles, Sevanavank, fut construite en 874. Fondée au IVe siècle, Sevanavank connut son essor au IXe siècle. Outre les deux églises encore debout, l'unique khatchkar du XVIIe siècle, orné de nombreuses scènes bibliques, mérite une attention particulière. Le nom de la capitale, Erevan, fut inscrit pour la première fois sur le dôme de Sevanavank.
