Known as the birthplace of modern Seattle, Occidental Square sits atop layers of buried history. Often called Seattle’s oldest bar, J&M Cafe and Cardroom has survived fires, Prohibition, and more than a century of changing fortunes. During Seattle’s “Wide Open Days,” the establishment became a hub for gambling, drinking, and nightlife. Today, reports of phantom footsteps, moving objects, unexplained noises, and ghostly figures roaming the abandoned upper floors have made J&M one of Pioneer Square’s most enduring paranormal legends.
