Hjalparfoss
In South-Iceland on the edge of the highland we can find Hjálparfoss - Help's Falls is another beautiful waterfall in the river Fossá in Þjórsárdalur valley. The waterfall was named after the region "Hjálp" meaning "help" as this little oasis was warmly welcomed by those travelling long distances over the barren highlands of Iceland.
The waterfall is split in two with a beautiful pond in front and surrounded by extraordinary basalt rock formations, making this spot a beautiful haven. Hjálparfoss - Help's Falls is another beautiful waterfall in the river Fossá in Þjórsárdalur valley. Hjálparfoss runs in the river Fossá right before it merges with the glacial river Þjórsá.
The difference between a fresh-water river like Fossá, and a glacial river, like Þjórsá, is vast. The glacial rivers are greyish white and forceful, full of sediment created by glacial erosion. The fresh-water river's in Iceland famously have a beautiful crisp blue hue which is captured perfectly at Hjálparfoss.

Sigoldufoss
As we enter the Highlands of Iceland we will stop at Sigöldufoss, a remarkable waterfall located at the Tungnaá river. Standing at an impressive 10 meters high, Sigöldufoss offers a stunning sight.
A few decades ago, this waterfall was part of the glacial river Tungnaá, with vast amounts of glacial water forcing their way downstream, turning it a muddy grey due to the sediment. However, the installation of the Sigalda Power Plant diverted the glacial water to drive hydroelectric turbines, leaving behind a smaller river of clear spring water.
This transformation changed the waterfall's color from grey to a striking turquoise. While the former waterfall was impressive with its vast volume falling six meters, many argue that Sigöldufoss is even more beautiful today.

This breathtaking destination offers a range of outdoor activities, including hiking, bathing in natural hot springs, and exploring lava fields and obsidian caves. Ljotipollur Lake
Ljótipollur, an explosion crater and crater lake in the Icelandic Highlands, reaches depths of approximately 150 meters. Despite its name, which translates to "ugly puddle," this crater lake is far from unattractive. Encircled by vibrant red and green hills, Ljótipollur offers a breathtaking contrast that makes it a true photographer's paradise.
The striking red and green colors are attributed to iron and sulfur deposits found in the rocks and soil, contributing to the area's distinctive and unforgettable landscape.

Volcan Hekla
Hekla is one of Iceland’s most explosive and unpredictable volcanoes. Since the settlement of Iceland, Hekla has erupted between twenty to thirty times and continues to be active today.
Situated along a 40-kilometer (25-mile) rift, the most active segment, Heklugjá, lies directly beneath the volcano itself. Hekla's summit features numerous craters, with two being particularly prone to eruptions.
Some of Hekla's eruptions have been so massive that the resulting ash altered the climate of the northern hemisphere for years. Astonishingly, about 10 percent of Iceland’s landmass has been shaped by lava flows from Hekla.
During our journey, we'll make a stop nearby for a photo opportunity and take in the awe-inspiring view of this mighty volcano.
