An in-depth look at Brooklyn’s premier green space. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux after their completion of Central Park, Prospect Park represents the pinnacle of 19th-century landscape architecture. This walking tour examines how 526 acres of pasture and woodland were transformed into a seamless urban retreat. This route covers the park’s three distinct zones: the open expanse of the Long Meadow, the engineered waterways of the Lake, and the dense canopy of the Ravine—Brooklyn’s only forest. Along the way, we will discuss the park’s construction, its architectural landmarks, and its role in the development of modern Brooklyn.

Pavillon Concert Grove
Located at the edge of the 60-acre lake, this open-air pavilion features beautiful Victorian cast-iron work and Hindu-inspired design elements (often called the Oriental Pavilion). It was designed as a place for mid-19th-century Brooklynites to gather for live music, making it the perfect spot to conclude a historical narrative.

Prospect Park Boathouse
Overlooking the serene Lullwater, this landmark structure was built in 1905 and is heavily influenced by classical French architecture. It is one of the first structures built after the Olmsted and Vaux era, showing how the park evolved into the 20th century.
