The square was used for ceremonial purposes during the Congress of Ljubljana in 1821, after which it was named. There is also the oldest university in Slovenia, the Roman wall and Roman citizen statue and the main information point iEmona. Here you can imagine the Roman city of Emona as it was 2000 years ago.

Butcher’s Bridge became quite famous "love bridge". Not so long after the opening in 2010 people started hanging locks on it, symbolizing declarations of eternal love.

At the center of the square lies the Prešeren Monument, a tribute to Slovenian greatest poet France Prešeren. Today the square is a modern meeting point and a place of happening and people-watching.

The Triple Bridge is a group of three bridges across the Ljubljanica river. . It was at first called in 13th century the Old Bridge. Later in 19th century was replaced by a new bridge and named Franz's Bridge in honor of Archduke Franz Karl of Austria. Jože Plečnik designed the extension of the bridge with two footbridges at each side of it.
