Most memorials in India were built by kings for their queens. Rani ki Vav is the rare exception — a seven storey UNESCO stepwell built by a queen for her king, its walls covered in over 500 sculptures from the Hindu pantheon descending 23 metres into the earth. Forty kilometres away the Modhera Sun Temple was built in 1026 AD on the Tropic of Cancer so that the first rays of the sun on the summer solstice fall directly onto the main shrine at the precise moment of sunrise. In the weaving town of Patan, four weavers spend 100 days producing a single Patola saree in the double Ikat technique, the most complex weaving tradition in the world. Three extraordinary places. reine de la maison
We have many monuments in India built by Kings in memory of their Queens. Rani ki Vav is a rare memorial for a King built by his Queen! This 7 storied Step Well is a world heritage sight for its incredible engineering and craftsmanship. Located on the banks of the Saraswati River, it is designed as an inverted temple with the central theme around the 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu, highlighting the reverence for water. With more than 500 sculptures from the Hindu pantheon of Gods, Rani ki Vav is arguably the most extravagant water storage system in the world!

Sun Temple
We will first visit a 11th century temple built for the Sun God. This magnificent temple was built by Bhimadeva I of the Solanki dynasty in the year 1026 on the banks of the river Pushpavati. The design of the temple is incredible. Located on the Trop of Cancer at 23.5 degrees latitude, the Sun Temple gets lit-up by the first rays of the sun on the summer solstice every year. The temple is built on a lotus shaped structure and is adorned with carvings from epics like Mahabharata, Ramayana and Kamasutra. Suryakund is the Step Well next to the Sun Temple and has a 108 temples in it!

Patan Patola Heritage
The Patola Saree weaving is magic in action. In todays Instant World, the Patola Sarees are a step back in time. One single Saree is made by 4 weavers over a 100 days. We will visit Patan to see a few weavers in action. The Sarees at Patan are Double Ikat, the most sophisticated weaving style in the world, in which both warp and the weft are resist-dyed prior to weaving.
