Officiellement, la cérémonie a pour but de fermer la frontière pour la nuit et de baisser le drapeau national. Il s'agit toutefois d'une cérémonie de divertissement et d'une démonstration de fierté nationale pour les milliers de personnes qui s'y rendent chaque jour. En amont de la cérémonie, la foule entonne l'hymne national indien, applaudit et danse à la Bollywood sur des chansons hindi.
