Galerie de l'Académie
The museum hosts many incredible artistic gems, the best-known being Michelangelo’s “David”. Located in the main gallery this vast statue towers above the onlookers. Take time to walk around it and marvel at Michelangelo’s genius from every perspective. It is a truly spectacular work of art; carved from a single block of Carrara marble it was sculpted when Michelangelo was in his early twenties. At 17 feet (5.17 metres) it depicts David, the biblical hero who slew the giant Goliath. Unveiled in 1504 this extraordinary statue came to symbolize the defense of civil liberties embodied by the Florentine Republic.
The Accademia is also home to a number of unfinished sculptures by Michelangelo as well as works by Botticelli, Paolo Uccello and Andrea del Sarto, amongst others.
We’re sure you’ll love this tour of the Accademia and learn captivating facts and anecdotes from your expert guide who will make your visit to this wonderful museum informative and unforgettable.
