L'isthme de Corinthe est une étroite bande de terre reliant la Grèce centrale au Péloponnèse, tandis que le canal qui y a été ouvert relie le golfe Saronique au golfe de Corinthe. Il mesure environ 6 kilomètres de long et son point le plus étroit se trouve là où le canal de Corinthe a été construit (1880-1893). C'était un point stratégique, et c'est pourquoi un mur avait été construit dès l'Antiquité (fin du Ve siècle av. J.-C.), qui a été préservé jusqu'à l'époque byzantine (Hexamilion).

Corinth was a city-state (polis) on the Isthmus of Corinth, the narrow stretch of land that joins the Peloponnese to the mainland of Greece, roughly halfway between Athens and Sparta. The modern city of Corinth is located approximately 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) northeast of the ancient ruins. Since 1896, systematic archaeological investigations of the Corinth Excavations by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens have revealed large parts of the ancient city, and recent excavations conducted by the Greek Ministry of Culture have brought to light important new facets of antiquity.

Church of Apostle Paul is an important Orthodox church in the city of Corinth, dedicated to Apostle Paul, who preached Christianity there during the 1st century AD.
