One of the few buildings in Newcastle that survive from the Jacobean Period

2,000 years ago the Roman Bridge stood here. Now is a not quite so old but incredibly impressive swing bridge. A fantastic part of Newcastle heritage built at a time when the city changed and led the world in so many areas.

The Romans first built a castle here and of course we are near one end of Hadrians Wall that spans the country to the Tyne which was then an impenetrable defensive barrier.

The current Norman castle is pretty much built on and over the old Roman one but we can see some foundations and ruins nearby and find out exactly why they are here.

Built in 1247, this formidable 'new' entrance to the castle has a history as grim as its name suggests!

We'll go inside this beautiful old and very distinctive Cathedral.

It's been described and voted as the most beautiful Urban street in Britain with fine Georgian buildings and a delicate sloping curve. The very heart of Newcastle.
