During the 1918 Spring Offensive, Bapaume was captured by the German army. Although defended by New Zealand troops, the town was briefly lost, only to be retaken by the Kiwis in August 1918. The Caterpillar Valley Cemetery and Memorial is located on Bazentin Ridge, near Longueval. This was the site of the New Zealand Division's first engagement in the Battle of the Somme, in September 1916.
