Les monts Kohala sont les plus anciens des cinq volcans qui composent la Grande Île d'Hawaï, situés à l'extrémité nord de l'île. Formé il y a plus d'un million d'années, le Kohala est entré en éruption il y a environ 120 000 ans et est aujourd'hui considéré comme éteint. Au fil du temps, l'érosion a profondément façonné son paysage, le transformant en vallées profondes et luxuriantes et en falaises abruptes et escarpées, notamment sur le versant exposé au vent (nord-est), où des précipitations abondantes favorisent des forêts tropicales denses et une riche biodiversité. En revanche, les versants sous le vent (ouest) sont beaucoup plus secs en raison de l'ombre pluviométrique. Culminant à environ 1 660 mètres d'altitude, la chaîne de montagnes constitue un bassin versant crucial, alimentant de nombreux ruisseaux et rivières qui se frayent un chemin à travers le terrain jusqu'à l'océan. Kohala revêt une profonde importance culturelle, car c'est là que naquit le roi Kamehameha Ier, qui unifia les îles hawaïennes.
