Kumamoto Castle is one of Japan’s most celebrated fortresses, originally constructed in the early 1600s by the feudal lord Kato Kiyomasa. Known as one of the “Three Great Castles of Japan,” it is admired for its massive stone walls, ingenious defensive design, and the elegant black-and-white contrast of its keep. Although parts of the structure were damaged in past earthquakes, careful restoration has revived its grandeur. Visitors can step inside the reconstructed main tower, explore turrets and gates, and view exhibits displaying samurai armor, weapons, and the culture of the warrior class. From the castle grounds, sweeping views of Kumamoto City create a striking link between centuries of history and the modern skyline.

Jardin Suizenji Jojuen
Suizenji Jojuen Garden(commonly known as Suizenji Park) is a landscape masterpiece created in the 17th century by the Hosokawa clan. Designed as a strolling garden in the Momoyama style, it symbolizes the 53 Stations of the Tokaido, the historic route between Kyoto and Tokyo. A miniature Mt. Fuji rises gracefully from the grounds, while a large pond reflects seasonal scenery—cherry blossoms in spring, irises in summer, maple leaves in autumn, and a serene landscape in winter. The harmony between human design and nature is evident throughout the garden, making it a tranquil and photogenic destination that captures the essence of Japanese aesthetics.
