The mission of the Gordon Parks Museum is to honor the life and work of Gordon Parks, internationally-known photographer, filmmaker, writer, and musician; and to use his remarkable life story to teach about artistic creativity, cultural awareness, and the role of diversity in our lives.

The landmark Hall of Unsung Heroes museum and think tank in historic Fort Scott, Kansas, showcases the dramatic and diverse sagas of Unsung Heroes whose actions against injustice have changed the world. These stories of everyday people are proof positive that one individual has the power to make a profound difference in the lives of others.

Forging a Nation: Fort Scott in the Mid Nineteenth Century Promises made and broken! Who deserves to be free? The fight for freedom! Soldiers fighting settlers! Each of these stories is a link in the chain of events that encircled Fort Scott from 1842-1873. All of the site's structures, its parade ground, and its tallgrass prairie bear witness to this era when the country was forged from a young republic into a united transcontinental nation.

Established in 1862, Fort Scott National Cemetery is a solemn and historic resting place honoring veterans who served our nation from the Civil War through the present day. Located adjacent to Fort Scott National Historic Site, the cemetery reflects the community’s deep military heritage and longstanding role in American history. The cemetery’s peaceful grounds feature rows of white headstones, mature trees, and carefully maintained landscapes that invite quiet reflection and remembrance. As one of the oldest national cemeteries in the region, it serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by generations of service members and their families. Today, Fort Scott National Cemetery remains an active national cemetery, cared for by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and continues to be a place of honor, respect, and gratitude.
