Kairakuen Park
Kairakuen is one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens and a masterpiece of landscape design from the Edo period. Created by Tokugawa Nariaki, lord of the Mito Domain, the garden was designed as a place to be enjoyed by both the ruling class and the public, an unusually open concept for its time. Featuring expansive plum groves, bamboo forests, and carefully planned contrasts of light and shade, Kairakuen reflects both aesthetic refinement and philosophical intent. Visitors can experience a garden that blends seasonal beauty with historical depth, offering insight into the cultural values and political thought of samurai-era Japan.

Kobuntei
Kobuntei is an elegant wooden pavilion located within Kairakuen Garden, originally built as a place for poetry, learning, and hospitality. Used by the lords of the Mito Domain to receive guests and cultivate intellectual exchange, the building offers refined interior spaces designed to harmonize with the surrounding landscape. From its upper floors, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the garden and beyond, experiencing how architecture and nature were intentionally integrated. Kobuntei provides a deeper understanding of how Kairakuen functioned not only as a garden, but as a cultural and social setting.
