Bears Ears National Monument, located in southeastern Utah, is a striking and culturally significant area covering over 1.35 million acres. The monument is named after two prominent buttes—Bears Ears—that rise dramatically above the surrounding terrain, serving as both natural landmarks and cultural symbols.

The name "Hole in the Rock" comes from a dramatic natural feature—an actual rock formation with a hole through it. This hole served as a passageway for the pioneers, who faced a difficult and dangerous journey over challenging desert terrain, steep cliffs, and canyons. The pioneers used a combination of wagons, teams of oxen, and careful engineering to carve out a path through the rock, allowing their wagons to pass through the narrow opening.

In Utah, the San Juan River is known for its dramatic scenery, including high mesas, sandstone cliffs, and deep canyons, making it a popular destination for outdoor activities like rafting, kayaking, and fishing. The river's course takes it through remote areas, including parts of the Navajo Nation, and provides access to some of the most picturesque and isolated spots in the state, such as the San Juan River Gorge.

The formation of Comb Ridge dates back millions of years, as the region experienced significant tectonic activity, including faulting and uplifting, which tilted the rock layers at steep angles. These rock layers, primarily composed of Navajo Sandstone and other sedimentary rocks, have been shaped by erosion over time, creating the ridge's dramatic and jagged profile.
