The Belice River Mouth and neighboring dunes Nature Reserve protects a coastal area of exceptional naturalistic interest, extending for approximately 5 km between Marinella di Selinunte and Porto Palo di Menfi; the protected area which constitutes one of the most preserved Sicilian coastal areas and includes the terminal stretch of the Belice river (one of the longest Sicilian rivers), characterized by an important humid environment rich in riparian and marshy vegetation and a resting and nesting place for many species of birds, and the suggestive dune and sand formations shaped by the wind, the force of the sea and the plants. The beach is also home to various species of fauna of great interest, including some highly localized arthropods threatened by the continuous anthropization of our coasts, and is a nesting site for the sea turtle Caretta caretta, a highly threatened species in the Mediterranean.
