William Adams received a fiefdom from the Shogun, becoming Japan's sole foreign feudal lord. We visit sites in Hemi on the Miura Peninsula – his former domain – that evoke his life, work, character, and family relationships.
The location is close to Yokosuka Main Port, the entrance from the Pacific Ocean into Tokyo Bay, a key defensive location for Edo.
Visit to Jōdoji Temple, his familial temple which was the centre of his Hemi territory. We visit also Kashima Shrine next to Jodoji Temple, one rebuilt by the son of William Adams.
Hike for just over 20 minutes towards Tsukayama Park. We view Tokyo Bay and the Bōsō Peninsula opposite, gaining an understanding of Shogun’s strategy.
