Kishi Station
Welcome to Kishi Station in Wakayama, home to the world-famous "feline stationmaster"! Since 2007, the calico cat Tama was officially appointed as stationmaster, and her adorable image—wearing a stationmaster's cap and "attending duty"—quickly captivated Japan, becoming a beloved mascot that saved the local railway. Today, the third-generation stationmaster, Nitama, continues this heartwarming mission, greeting visitors daily at her station "office." The station building is designed in the shape of a cat, and even the trains are adorned with charming feline-themed decorations. Kimii-dera
Kimiidera Temple is Wakayama's most revered sacred site, long celebrated as Kansai's hidden cherry blossom paradise. Founded in 770 AD, it enshrines the compassionate Eleven-Faced Kannon. The temple derives its name from three sacred springs within its grounds, believed to hold purifying energy. Each spring, around 1,200 cherry trees burst into bloom, with the grand weeping cherry at the entrance path forming a breathtaking "pink waterfall"—honored as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. Climb the 231 stone steps to enjoy panoramic views of Wakaura Bay, where mountains, sea, and blossoms unite in harmony. More than a spiritual destination, it offers a serene space where nature and history intertwine.

Engetsu Island
Engetsu Island, a symbolic natural wonder in Shirahama, Wakayama, is famed for its unique sea-eroded arch that forms a perfect circular opening at its center—resembling a full moon suspended above the emerald waters, hence its poetic name. The island is most celebrated during sunset, as the sinking sun aligns precisely within the rocky aperture, casting a breathtaking glow through the arch and painting the sky and sea in golden-crimson hues. Recognized as one of "Japan’s Top 100 Sunsets," it can be admired from Shirahama Beach or nearby observation decks, offering ever-changing vistas across seasons. This pristine "maritime moon" is not only a photographer’s paradise but also a timeless tribute to nature’s sublime artistry.

Senjojiki Rock Plateau
Senjojiki, situated in Shirahama, Wakayama, is a spectacular coastal formation consisting of vast, flat bedrock shaped by millennia of wave erosion. Its name poetically means "a thousand tatami mats," describing the expansive layered rock surface that stretches like a natural plaza overlooking the Pacific. During high tide, waves crash dramatically through crevices, while low tide reveals intricate tidal pools and fascinating erosional patterns. Visitors can walk across this geological masterpiece, tracing the artistry of time and sea. Renowned as a prime spot for sunset and stargazing, the rocks glow crimson under the evening sun, transforming the coast into a living painting. This ancient stone stage, with the eternal ocean as its orchestra, composes a grand ode to nature’s enduring power.

Sandambeki Rock Cliff
Sandanbeki is a breathtaking natural wonder in Shirahama, Wakayama, featuring majestic sea cliffs stretching approximately 2 kilometers along the coast and rising up to 50 meters high. Its name, meaning "three-tiered cliffs," comes from the dramatic stepped rock formations that descend into the Pacific Ocean. Known for its fierce waves and rugged reefs, the site thrills visitors with thunderous surges echoing through sea caves below. An elevator descends 36 meters into one such cavern—once a hidden base for the Kumano Navy—where the power of the swirling waves can be intimately felt. From the cliff-top observatory, panoramic views of the endless Pacific unfold, with winter waves offering particularly spectacular displays. This awe-inspiring landscape, carved by the relentless clash of land and sea, composes a grand symphony of natural forces.
