Le monastère de Varlaam est le deuxième plus grand monastère. Il est situé en face du monastère des Météores et fut fondé au milieu du XIVe siècle par l'exercitant Hosios Varlaam. L'élégant monastère Catholicon fut construit en l'honneur d'Agioi Pantes en 1541-1542 par deux frères de Ioannina, les moines-prêtres Hosioi Théophane et Nectaire l'Apsarade. L'église principale fut décorée en 1548. D'après des critères stylistiques, cette magnifique peinture murale est attribuée au célèbre hagiographe de Thèbes, Frago Catelano.

This is the most accessible monastery, where instead of steps you simply cross a small bridge to reach the entrance. It is ideal for visitors who cannot use the steps and yet they wish to have a real experience of a Meteora monastery. The beginning of monastic life on the rock of Agios Stephanos dates back to early in the 12th century. Hosios Antonios, in the first half of the 15th century, and Hosios Philotheos, who renovated or rather rebuilt from its foundations the old small and elegant Catholicon, the present church of Agios Stephanos, in 1545 are mentioned as its founders. St. Stephen’s Monastery includes two cathedrals; the old 16th century chapel which was severely damaged during WWII and the consequent Greek Civil War, and the 18th century main cathedral that is dedicated to Saint Charalambos and includes his holy relics.

Le monastère de Roussanou doit son nom au premier ermite probable qui s'y est installé. La cathédrale principale a été fondée à la fin du XVIe siècle et décorée trente ans plus tard. Comparé à d'autres rochers où des monastères ont été construits, celui de Roussanou est moins élevé, ce qui le rend plus accessible. Initialement fondé par des moines, le monastère a subi de graves dommages pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il est devenu un couvent en 1988.

Le monastère de la Sainte-Trinité (Agia Triada) est le plus difficile d'accès, mais une fois arrivé au sommet, la vue panoramique sur les environs est tout simplement captivante ! Ce monastère est situé tout près du couvent Saint-Étienne et est perché sur un rocher abrupt et magnifique. Il était déjà organisé en monastère depuis 1362, comme l'indique un document de Syméon Uressis Paléologue. Les visiteurs doivent suivre un sentier qui les mène d'abord au pied du rocher, avant de commencer à gravir environ 140 marches.
