We start our journey towards the West Coast by dropping you off at the Christchurch Railway Station at Tower Junction.

TranzAlpine Train
Catch the TranzAlpine from Christchurch through to Greymouth. Enjoy the views from the train’s open air carriage as you travel across braided rivers, past high country stations and alpine lakes, around horseshoe bends, and through the 8km long Otira Tunnel.
IMPORTANT: Please note that TranzAlpine bookings are managed by Great Journeys New Zealand, who cannot be held responsible for any missed onward connections due to delayed train arrivals. The TranzAlpine’s departure from Greymouth is 2:15pm and arrival into Christchurch is 7pm. However, the service can experience delays of 30 minutes or more so please bear this in when booking this product. This may mean that you might not be able to have time for the views in Cobden. Please be aware and patient if this occurs. As Great Journeys is a third party supplier, we are not responsible for any delays or issues that may occur while aboard the TranzAlpine. For concerns or questions, please contact the operator directly.

Greymouth
Upon arrival in Greymouth, our guide will collect you from the Information Centre - conveniently located at the train station. As the largest town in the Westland region, Greymouth, or Māwhera, is home to about 14,000 people. Framed by chiseled cliff tops, wild beaches, the Grey River and the picturesque Grey Valley, this charming destination is not only a beautiful spot, but a key transit hub and community for the West Coast.

Greymouth Breakwater
Located just a short drive away from the centre of Greymouth, Cobden is a beach break with a rock breakwater at its southern end, producing incredible waves that pound right up against the structure. It’s a rugged but picturesque photo spot.

Otira Viaduct Lookout
Aussi connu sous le nom de « Coin de la Mort », le belvédère du viaduc d'Otira est un endroit exceptionnel pour admirer le parc national dans toute sa splendeur. Ce pont est la seule raison pour laquelle il est aujourd'hui possible de traverser Arthur's Pass en voiture. Long de 440 mètres, il s'agit d'une véritable prouesse d'ingénierie. Le belvédère est l'endroit idéal pour prendre une photo du viaduc et du paysage environnant. Ouvrez grand les yeux à cet arrêt ! Avec un peu de chance, vous pourriez même apercevoir un petit Kea effronté, le perroquet alpin furtif de Nouvelle-Zélande !

Parc national d'Arthur's Pass
We depart the lookout and head towards Arthur’s Pass Village. Located 740 metres above sea level, you will be able to experience the majestic Southern Alps up close. Once we arrive, you can choose to either walk to Devils Punch Bowl, or grab a coffee and spend some time exploring the local shops.
Devils Punch Bowl - This walking track is approximately 1 hour long, with a gradual incline (including steps) towards a ferocious 131 metre tall waterfall. Fitness is low to moderate as you walk through the bush and native beech forest.
Please note that depending on time, your guide will let you know how long you have and will assist you on the day in regard to the best activity for the weather and time allocated.

Lake Lyndon
Nous nous arrêterons ensuite au lac Lyndon. Niché au pied du col Porters, Lyndon, ou Te Hāpua Waikawa, est apprécié des amateurs de jetboat, d'ornithologie et de nageurs courageux. Il est réputé pour être l'un des lacs les plus froids de la région.

Colline du Château
Castle Hill, ou Kura Tāwhiti, est sans doute l'un des sites les plus remarquables de Canterbury. Célèbre pour ses paysages qui inspireront plus tard la Terre du Milieu™, Flock Hill, située à proximité et dont Castle Hill partage la géologie, est devenue l'un des lieux de tournage du Monde de Narnia : Le Lion, la Sorcière blanche et l'Armoire magique. Les rochers calcaires érodés se dressent fièrement au bord des collines touffues autrefois baignées par l'océan. Au fil du temps, ils se sont érodés, formant les formes uniques et étonnantes que vous pouvez admirer aujourd'hui. En vous promenant parmi les rochers, vous apercevrez peut-être les grimpeurs et les amateurs de bloc qui fréquentent la région. Veuillez noter qu'il ne s'agit pas d'une randonnée guidée ; vous pourrez donc explorer ce magnifique site par vous-même.

As we leave Castle Hill and make our way through Porters Pass on our return to the Garden City, sit back and relax after a wonderful day aboard the TranzAlpine, and exploring Arthur’s Pass and Castle Hill. With your camera roll full, this day will definitely be something to brag about!
