Le château de Versailles, ancienne résidence royale française et centre du gouvernement, est aujourd'hui un monument national. Il est situé à Versailles, dans le département des Yvelines, en région Île-de-France, dans le nord de la France, à 16 km à l'ouest-sud-ouest de Paris. Centre de la cour de France, Versailles fut l'un des plus grands théâtres de l'absolutisme européen. La résidence d'origine était principalement un pavillon de chasse et un lieu de retraite privé pour Louis XIII (règne de 1610 à 1643) et sa famille. En 1624, le roi confia à Jacques Lemercier la construction d'un château sur ce site. Ses murs sont aujourd'hui conservés comme façade extérieure donnant sur la cour de Marbre.
