St. Peter's Basilica
The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter, also called Saint Peter's Basilica, is located in Vatican City, an independent microstate inside Rome, Italy. It is a High Renaissance Italian basilica. Pope Nicholas and Pope Julius first envisioned it in the fifteenth century as a replacement for the dilapidated Old St. Peter's Basilica, which was built by Roman Emperor Constantine the Great in the fourth century. The present basilica was completed on November 18, 1626, having begun construction on April 18, 1506.
St. Peter's Basilica is also a papal basilica. St. Peter's Basilica has priority over all other minor basilicas in the globe due to its status as a major basilica.
