Located north of Udaipur in the wilderness, Kumbhalgarh is the second most important citadel after Chittorgarh in the Mewar region. Cradled in the Aravali Ranges the fort was built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha. Because of its inaccessibility and hostile topography the fort had remained un-conquered. The fort's thick wall stretches some 36 kms and is wide enough to take eight horses abreast. Maharana Fateh Singh renovated the fort in the 19th century.
Once inside go on a leisurely stroll to admire the enormous outer walls of the Fort. Its staggering design is mind-blowing and clever. Clearly this was a Fort built for battles, and was forever battle ready.
From here it is easy to imagine “rank upon rank of loyal warriors streaming down the hillside ready for battle. If you listen carefully, you may still hear faint echoes of clashing armour, neighing of horses and above it all, the spine-chilling trumpet of a charging elephant.”
A great place to end the tour of the Kumbhalgarh Fort is to spend some quiet moments before the final descent. All along the way (up and down) there are places to rest, admire the views & move on.
