About
The Treblinka extermination camp was created on the order of Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler in 1942. However, from 1940 there was a penal camp for the Polish population (‘Treblinka I’) in the northern part of the Warsaw District, which in 1941 was transformed into a labor camp. In the vicinity of ‘Treblinka I’, the death camp called ‘Treblinka II’ was established to perform mass extermination of Jewish men, women and children.

Currently, in the area of the camp, the Museum of Struggle and Martyrdom was built. While visiting the camp in Treblinka, you can visit the exhibition dedicated to the extermination camp. A monument built in 1964 commemorates Treblinka and its victims. It resembles the Wailing Wall surrounded by a symbolic graveyard of granite blocks the names of places where the murdered were born are inscribed on it.
The camp in Treblinka was second after the Auschwitz-Birkenau in terms of number of victims killed in stationary gas chambers and during mass executions. The Germans directed transports from ghettos in occupied Poland to the camp, including the Warsaw ghetto.
