St. Peter's Basilica
The “St. Peter's Basilica and Tombs of the Popes” tour begins in the iconic St. Peter's Square, where your expert guide will introduce you to the history and significance of the basilica within the Catholic world. You’ll then enter the basilica through the grand central portal, immediately immersed in the splendor of Renaissance and Baroque architecture.
Inside, you'll see Michelangelo's moving Pieta and Bernini's towering baldachin above the papal altar. Your guide will explain the meaning behind these masterpieces, along with the richly decorated chapels and mosaics that fill the space.
The tour continues near the Altar of Confession, directly above St. Peter's tomb, with a breathtaking view of Michelangelo’s Dome.
It concludes in the Vatican Grottoes beneath the basilica, the resting place of many popes. Your guide will share the stories of these pontiffs, including St. Peter, the Church’s first pope, and the lasting importance of this sacred site for millions of believers.
