The Castillo de San Marcos is a 17th-century Spanish stone fortress in St. Augustine, Florida, built between 1672 and 1695 to protect the city from pirates and rival European powers. Made of coquina, a shell-based limestone that absorbs cannon fire rather than shattering, it’s the oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S. Its star-shaped design, thick walls, and strategic location on the Matanzas River made it nearly impossible to capture by force. Today, it’s a National Monument, offering visitors a glimpse into over 300 years of colonial, military, and cultural history.
