Day 1 – Discovering Soviet Heritage in Vilnius
Our tour begins at the Civil Registry Office of Vilnius, an impressive example of Soviet-era architecture. Here, you’ll learn about the building’s purpose and symbolism during Soviet times — and how its role has transformed in modern Lithuania.
From there, we’ll stroll through a small nearby park and start descending a charming pedestrian street offering a panoramic view of modern Vilnius — a perfect contrast between the city’s past and present.
35 minutes
2
KGB Museum (Genocido Auku Muziejus)
Along the way, we’ll pass the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights (commonly known as the KGB Museum). Your guide will share a short explanation about the building’s dark history and the stories preserved within its walls. A visit inside is possible for those who wish to explore further. Required a prior notice. Be informed that the Museum is opened from Wednesday till Sunday. There are also guided tours offered. Me, as a licensed Vilnius guide, I do not hold that license. It should be arranged with each group in advance.
15 minutes
3
Druskininkai
Before continuing, we’ll enjoy a short coffee break — a perfect moment to relax and reflect on what we’ve seen.
We’ll then set off towards Druskininkai (120 km from Vilnius) one of Lithuania’s most beloved resort towns. Known for its mineral springs, wooden villas, and tranquil atmosphere.
On the way, we’ll stop for lunch at a local restaurant.
PS. It depends on the weather and light conditions if we are going to visit the Grūtas open-air Park on our way to Druskininkai (it is at some 5 km from the Town) or we will dot it the next day, on our way back to Vilnius.
I Option: we’ll check into one of Druskininkai’s spa hotels, where you can relax and unwind. If you wish, your guide will be happy to suggest the best local restaurants, spa treatments, or evening activities.

Grutas Park
The Grūtas Park, located about 120 km southwest of Vilnius, near the spa town of Druskininkai.
It is a fascinating open-air museum nestled in a pine forest, covering around 20 hectares. The park displays a remarkable collection of Soviet-era statues, busts, and ideological relics that once stood across Lithuania.
By gathering these monuments in one setting, the park allows visitors to reflect on the legacy of Soviet occupation and understand how ideology shaped public art and everyday life. Rather than erasing these symbols, Lithuania chose to relocate them here — turning propaganda into a space for dialogue about memory, power, and reconciliation.
Grūtas Park is not just a display of relics; it’s a living reminder of how societies confront difficult histories. Each statue tells a story — of authority, control, and the human spirit’s resilience.
