Itinerary
1
Sankyo Soko Storehouse
A historic rice-warehouse complex built in 1893 in Sakata, originally part of the rice trade of the Shonai region. The white-walled warehouse buildings, rows of old zelkova trees and the riverside setting reflect the industrial and agricultural heritage of the city.
30 minutes
2
Former Honma Family Residence
Built in 1768 for the Honma family (once prominent landowners in the region) as a residence with both samurai-style and merchant-style architecture. It preserves many original features and gives insight into the lifestyle of a regional elite in Edo-period and Meiji Japan.
30 minutes
3
Hiyoriyama Park
A scenic park overlooking the Sea of Japan from Sakata, featuring a historic wooden hexagonal lighthouse (built 1895) and model of the old “Kitamae bune” (north-bound trading ships). It offers cherry-blossom viewing in spring and panoramic views of the port and sea.
30 minutes
4
Sakata Seafood Market
Located right next to Sakata Port, this market features freshly landed seafood from the Sea of Japan, shops and restaurants where you can buy or eat local fish and shellfish. Great stop for lunch or souvenirs.
If the market is closed, we will proceed to an alternative location.

16 Rakaniwa Rock
Jūroku Rakan Iwa (Sixteen Arhat Rocks) is a striking coastal rock formation located along the Sea of Japan in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture.
These rocks were carved by a Buddhist monk in the early 19th century as a memorial to sailors who lost their lives at sea. Each figure represents a Rakan (Arhat), a disciple of Buddha, and they are said to watch over the ocean and pray for the safety of those at sea.
Set against dramatic waves and rugged cliffs, the site offers a powerful atmosphere and is especially beautiful at sunset, when the rocks are bathed in golden light. It is a quiet, reflective place that combines natural beauty with deep spiritual meaning.
