This is why it was aptly named "Hawa Mahal," which translates to "Palace of Winds." Visitors can admire this fascinating building while enjoying the cool breeze within its walls.
The Hawa Mahal is a remarkable five-story building that stands without the need for a foundation. Its unique 87 degree angled pyramidal architecture has allowed it to remain standing for centuries, and its purpose was to provide an unobstructed view of the bustling streets below from the many jharokhas (windows) within. Built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799, this palace was designed specifically for royal women so they could observe daily life outside while remaining unseen.
